Tips for summer planting
Strive for Five!
Tips for success with Summer Planting:
Choose native and adapted plants that can withstand the extremes of temperature in our area. Barton Springs Nursery has the best selection in Texas, and our specialized staff is ready to help.
Water deeply in the morning to make sure that your garden is well hydrated for the day’s heat. It’s important to soak deeply and thoroughly to make sure all of the roots and adjacent soil is cool and moist.
Use compost as a portion of your backfill, mixed into the soil. This improves the soil structure, promotes soil-life that extends a root’s ability to harvest extra water, and offers a “well-balanced meal” to keep your plants happy!
Mulch well! In addition to suppressing weeds and giving the garden a neat, healthy look, mulch will mitigate temperature-fluctuations that can be damaging to a plant. A 2 to 4” mulch layer will keep roots cool, conserve water, and keep your garden thriving!
Mist your plants’ foliage and also drench the root zone with an ounce-per-gallon-of-water solution of Liquid Seaweed once every two weeks. Liquid Seaweed is replete with essential minerals and enzymes that fortify your plant, and contribute directly to enhancing drought tolerance.
